Lola Final Concept

During the redesigning for the end character look I decided to change the hair style of Lola’s character as I wanted her hair messier and un-kept.  I decided to go with a shorter style in the end and also added freckles to her face to add youth.

Final concept for Lola’s character.  I am very happy with the way she has turned out and think the final colour palette went well with the environment I am working on.  the environment will be a contrast in colour compared to Lola and Saber’s colour palette.  I put together a character sheet as well to show Saber and Lola together. I am also very pleased with this end result.

The next challenged I face will be to keep the environment in the same style as the two character. I am also working on storyboards and a line test at the moment.

Saber Final Concept

So here’s a final character pose sheet of Saber and the final concept art of his appearance.  The environment are not final yet, but it gives me a rough idea.

Saber Character Designing Process

So like before using the research, I have designed Saber’s character and tried to keep him to a similar style as Lola.

So from my design sheet, I have tired to keep Saber looking young.  I feel like I have achieved this and I’m very happy with the final look of Saber.  I found when drawing out the character that the eye shape affects the gender of the panther.  If I made the corner of the eyes longer and pointier, Saber would look more female, so I have to make sure not to do this when drawing him later on.

I also did some expressions to see if I could keep the same style of drawing with the different expressions.  I think I managed this well, the only one I feel I need to work on is the ‘roar’ expression.

Reference

I’m starting to look at the Jungle Book’s Bagheera, this will be a good reference for me.

Characters- Saber

When first coming up with the idea of Saber’s character I imagined him as a tiger but changed this later on as I found the detail on his fur to time consuming to draw.  So I changed him to a panther later on in the devoplment, I feel this was the right decision to make as a panther seems stronger and more mysterious.

This is the early Saber design sheet.

Early concept art of Saber, I have yet to do a final character sheet.

I started then to look into panthers, their movement and bone structure.  I also did some test animations of walk cycles as their movement is tricky.   This has proven quite hard as I haven’t had experience in animating animals and have yet to perfect it.

Colour Palettes

Style Achieved!

So from looking into the style of animation I liked, I draw up some more sketches of Lola’s character.

I really like the style of these’s drawings, but they are still to detailed.  So from this I will keep the same look but tone down the detail, as it will be time consuming when I start animating.

I also did a quite concept of this drawing to see if the character would work well with the kind of colour scheme I have in mind.

Finding The Right Style..

These images are the kind of style I want to achieve, but I want my character to be less detailed.

Lola Character Designing Process

Picking the key features from my research images and the characterization I started to develop sketches of clothing and character sketches of Lola.

I’m not happy with the style of these drawings, they don’t quite fit my description and they haven’t go the right look to them.  To fix this I will continue to research into the style of drawing I want for my animation.

Characters – Lola

There are two main characters in my animation; a young girl and her protector which is in the form of a panther.

Lola is  a 14 year old girl.  She is a strong, courageous character, who has been forced to grow up fast.  I want her personality to come through in her emotions as well as what she wears.  For her appearance, I started looking at various images and then found a fitting reference from the film Bridge to Terabithia.  I looked at the character Leslie Burke I really liked her quirky style and wanted to incorporate it in Lola. Although Lola is a princess, she lives on the streets so her clothes can’t be too pretty.

Her clothes are made up of faded tones of cold shades of blue, purple and brown; her dress is torn, dirty and sewn and patched up in places.  Her colour palette is quite cold for the environment she lives in; this is to portray her youth, heartache and the fact that she is very vulnerable.  She has fashioned a throw around the top half of her dress to cover the pretty pattern, which might give her identity away.

Lola has an un-kept hairstyle, because she’s cut it.  Her hair colour is a honey blonde tone, which matches her olive complexion.  She has a blush of bronze/ peach in her checks to again hint her youthfulness.  The medallion Lola wears around her neck is on a thick black leather chain.  This medallion has an image of a tiger on it,  she can communicate with Saber through it.  This medallion is quite expensive looking, so she hides it down the front of the dress, so she doesn’t attract unwanted attention.
